Scenery is a 1976 jazz album by Japanese pianist Ryo Fukui. It was Fukui's first release. The album was virtually ignored in the US, as it came out at a time of reduced interest in jazz in America. However, it was well appreciated by Japanese fans and critics alike. In the decades since Scenery's release, the album has earned greater critical praise. Fukui's dexterity and self-taught style has earned him comparison to such piano greats as McCoy Tyner and Bill Evans.

Ryo Fukui (福居良 Fukui Ryo, June 1, 1948 – March 15, 2016) was a Japanese jazz pianist based in Sapporo. He played regularly at the "Slowboat" jazz club in Sapporo of which he and his wife Yasuko were the owners. Fukui taught and performed internationally until his death in 2016. His work has seen a spike in popularity during recent years due to its availability for streaming on YouTube as well as the rise of the lo-fi music genre.

Scenery ‎(LP, Album, RE, Hal). I was hooked on this album from the first song. The inclusion of a Miles Davis Quintet song starts you off strong, then the other compositions keep it going. I never thought I was a fan of piano-heavy jazz but Fukui immediately changed my mind. Always glad to find more Coltrane-like jazz. I hope a high quality version is coming soon.

Because of Jap-Jazz’s confused identity, one the genre’s most important albums was Ryo Fukui’s Scenery. While other artists were busy getting to know the textures of music, self-taught pianist Ryo, accompanied by a drummer and a bass player, decided to give his own spin on American jazz. He borrowed elements of post-bop, cool jazz, and even blues to create something unique, something unheard of before: a jazz album that prioritized composition rather than improvisation. The six song album continuously proves that Ryo is the complete master at his craft. Every section flows seamlessly into one.

A japanese hidden gem from the 70s, Scenery was the debut album from amazing pianist and jazz artist Ryo Fukui, who crafted a few beautiful records in that decade, but that soon became absent from the studios, believing much more on the power of live performances and improvisations, than on studio full lenghts per se. What we have here is a really moving, beauty of an album that displayed this charming vintage sound, as organic and moving as anyone could hope a good jazz album to be. There i. .
