Controversy is the fourth studio album by American recording artist Prince, released on October 14, 1981 by Warner Bros. It was produced by Prince, written (with the exception of one track) by him, and he also performed most of the instruments on its recording. Controversy opens with the title track, which raises questions that were being asked about Prince at the time, including his race and sexuality. The song "flirts with blasphemy" by including a chant of The Lord's Prayer.

Prince ‎– Controversy. Format: Vinyl, LP, Album. Before I decided to clean up my act, I wore this album out! Like "Dirty Mind", I had to sneak it into the house (I was only 10). The title track saved me for years from getting caught with it, it was the cleanest song on the album, it also was the funkiest. You P fans know about the rest, it was pure sexuality at work, something P would revisit over, and over again! A prince classic! Reply Notify me 1 Helpful.

Controversy emerged in 1981 at a pivotal time not just for Prince, but for America. It's often regarded as a bridge between Dirty Mind and 1999, but it's fascinating record in its own right. On October 9, 1981, just five days before the release of his fourth studio album, Controversy, Prince walked onto the stage of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, faced a crowd of roughly 90,000 predominantly white people (what was then his biggest audience ever) and experienced the kind of vitriolic backlash that would become the stuff of rock legend.

Controversy is Prince’s fourth album. It was released on October 14, 1981. It contains a fabulous mix of thought-provoking questions about life and politics. It also takes the listener on dizzying spiral of wild sexuality mixed with spirituality in the same breath. People who wanted call the album blasphemous were brought to their knees with a funky bass line and screams that woke up all their senses. They all came back, even if they had to listen in secret at night under the covers. In the title track Prince uses the same questions the media asked about his race, religion, nationality, & sexuality to make a point.

Even with all of Prince's ambitions, the music on Controversy doesn't represent a significant breakthrough from Dirty Mind, and it is often considerably less catchy and memorable. Nevertheless, Prince's talents as musician make the record enjoyable, even if it isn't as compelling as most of his catalog.

Album Controversy (1981). Bob Mockler, Mick Guzauski, Ross Pallone. Prince "Controversy" (1981) album.

Listen free to Prince – Controversy (Controversy, Sexuality and more). It is also more ambitious than its predecessor, attempting to tackle social protest ("Controversy," "Ronnie, Talk to Russia," "Annie Christian") along with sex songs ("Jack U Off," "Sexuality"), and it tries hard to bring funk to a rock audience and vice versa.
