Eric Andersen (born February 14, 1943) is an American singer-songwriter, who has written songs recorded by Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Linda Ronstadt, the Grateful Dead and many others. Since the late 1990s, he has resumed his solo career.
Eric Andersen first came to prominence as a performer in San Francisco in the early 1960's. He moved to New York in 1964 and became part of the Greenwich Village folk scene that included Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and others. His first LP for Vanguard was released in 1965. A second LP followed in 1966. His third release for Vanguard, in 1967, comprised the same songs as on the 2nd LP with folk rock instrumentation replacing the acoustic folk presentation. Toward the end of the decade Andersen moved to Europe. Two European albums were released plus a soundtrack album. 1988 saw the release of Ghosts Upon The Road, his first US release in over a decade. In the early 1990s he formed a productive performing and recording association with Rick Danko and Jonas Fjeld. Since then Andersen has spent time in both the US and Europe and continues to release occasional albums.
Eric Andersen's grandfather emigrated from Norway. Eric Andersen was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Snyder, New York, a suburb of Buffalo. Elvis Presley made an impression on him when 15-year-old Andersen saw him perform. In 1998, Andersen released his first solo album in a decade, Memory of the Future. Praised as "dreamy and introspective", the album was followed two years later by You Can't Relive The Past, which included original blues numbers as well as a selection of songs co-written with Townes Van Zandt. A double album, Beat Avenue, followed in 2003. Set against the cultural landscapes of his 50-year artistic journey, the film depicts an intimate portrait of Andersen-writing, recording, and performing today and reflecting on his life's work.
