Here at Wood Violins, we believe in fusing old world violin tradition with modern technology, thereby creating a harmonious synthesis of versatility and tradition. With custom, handcrafted instruments designed and built in the USA, we are dedicated to a truly unique concept in manufacturing. The instruments created by premier electric violinist Mark Wood reflect over 30 years of painstaking investigation, exploration, performing, and touring.

Violins sold under his label were made entirely by him – in 1912 an Alfred Acoulon cost 20 times the price of a Geronimo Barnabetti. Gustav Lütschg Violin, Bern 1927. Prague has a long and fine tradition of violin-making, and the early 20th century Prague makers produced some of the best sounding modern violins around. Karel Vávra was a leading maker of this school, and here we have a very fine Guarneri-inspired violin of his from 1950.

These violins were created by some of the most famous violinmakers, such as Antonio Stradivari and Guarneri ‘del Gesù’, have passed through the hands of Paganini, Yehudi Menuhin and Itzhak Perlman and cost, at the lowest estimate, well over one million dollars. Some may argue that certain modern instruments outperform them, yet these exceptional violins by makers such as Antonio Stradivari and Gieuseppe Antonio Guarneri (known as Guarnerius del Gesù, ‘of Jesus’) continue to inspire. Whether due to their exceptional sound, the violinists who have played them or because of a fascinating backstory, such as the violin from the Titanic or the ‘Gibson’ Stradivarius, which was missing for almost 50 years. It was made in Cremona in around 1725.

The underlying concept of this album is the use of some of the world’s rarest and most expensive violins. Most people are aware of Antonio Stradivari and his violins. Presented here are some of the lesser known instrument makers including Carlo Bergonzi, Alessandro Gagliano, Giuseppe Guarneri, Giovanni Battista Guadagnini, Jean Babptiste Villaumme, and Giuseppe del Gesu of the Guarneri family who is probably right behind Stradivari in regards to craftsmanship. The record features some of the most precious violins at the time (the time being 1959).
