Jaguar are frequently written off as a bit of a joke within the NWOBHM scene. Their sound is unapolagetically soft and AORish, with a few notable exceptions on their first album. While bands like Avenger were thrilling live audiences, with kickass speed metal attacks conducive to headbanging on a dangerous scale – you had the flipside of the coin; bands like Shogun, Praying Mantis and Jaguar (and of course the ever-successful Def Leppard) churning out sickly sweet, polished melodic rock to the more mainstream listener

Jaguar's 1983 debut "Power Games" often gets unfairly overlooked. It is a very solid offering with a definite nod to early Iron Maiden. At that point Jaguar were a fairly promising band amidst the whole NWOBHM scene. They would follow it up a year later with "This Time". Something had changed for sure and the results were probably different from what any fan was expecting or wanting. Around the time of it's release the were some references to the music on this album as "dance metal". That's an amusing label, but I think a more accurate description is that Jaguar were now playing AOR tinged hard rock. Gone were the blasting leads and pounding drums and they were instead replaced by piles of melodies, definite emphasis on the vocals and catchy choruses. It was a gamble that went against what the band had become known for.

Jaguar signed the deal with Neat Records and replaced Reiss with Paul Merrell, former vocalist from the band Stormtrooper, just in time for the recording of the single "Axe Crazy", which was released later in 1982. After intensive touring, the following year in June 1983 Jaguar released their first debut album, Power Games, which was a success with its no-nonsense high-speed approach. Their follow-up album This Time was released in 1984 by Roadrunner Records and marked a change of musical direction for the band, towards a more melodic and AORish sound. At this time they were supported by Motörhead´s management, but by the end of the year Jaguar disbanded as Roadrunner did not fulfil the contract deal with the band.
