Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is more than the subject of this documentary and more than the person toward whom the proverbial camera is pointed. It is his abiding intelligence, unquenchable vitality, and utter devotion to his craft that enliven every frame of footage, in much the same way that his vocal artistry could breathe the fullest life into each measure of every art song he ever performed. This Kultur release actually combines a lieder recital from 1991 (the year before he retired from singing), a plethora of performance extracts from nearly every phase of his performing life, and a series of interviews conducted a dozen years ago to commemorate his seventieth birthday. Listen especially to the exceptional magic that singer and pianist achieve in Schubert's exquisite "Im Abendrot.
Bruno Monsaingeon directs this profile of German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who marks the occasion of his 70th birthday with a discussion of his life and work. Fischer-Dieskau is also shown performing 23 songs by Franz Schubert at the Opera Theatre of Nuremberg. Rather than utilize subtitles, the makers of the film utlize a "voice over". Call me perverse but I really prefer to hear the voice of the individual artist as opposed to a narration. Clearly the somments of the great baritone are worthwhile hearing.

And possibly the most memorable minutes in the whole film are of a home-rehearsal in which Fischer-Dieskau works with Varady (his wife) on Amelia’s Morro aria in Un ballo in maschera. That and a rehearsal of him conducting Schubert’s Fifth Symphony show the complete musician, the knowledge and understanding of a huge library of scores stored in his mind. The Nurnberg Schubert recital shown at the end would be marvellous simply as a demonstration of mental mastery, even if the singing itself were less remarkable
Fischer-Dieskau was by virtual acclamation one of the world’s great singers, from the 1940s to his official retirement in 1992, and an influential teacher and orchestra conductor for many years thereafter. He was also a formidable industry, making hundreds of recordings that pretty much set the modern standard for performances of lieder, the musical settings of poems first popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. His output included the many hundreds of Schubert songs appropriate for the male voice, the songs and song cycles of Schumann and Brahms, and those of later composers like Mahler,.
