By 1959, Pickett recorded the song "Let Me Be Your Boy" with the Primettes as background singers. The song is the B-side of his 1963 single "My Heart Belongs to You". The genesis of "In the Midnight Hour" was a recording session on May 12, 1965, at which Wexler worked out a powerful rhythm track with studio musicians Steve Cropper and Al Jackson of the Stax Records house band, including bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn. Stax keyboard player Booker T. Jones, who usually played with Dunn, Cropper and Jackson as Booker T. & the . s, did not play on the studio sessions with Pickett. Pickett recorded several tracks in 1972 for a planned new album on Atlantic, but after the single "Funk Factory" reached R&B and pop in June 1972, he left Atlantic for RCA Records. Originally released in 1965, Wilson Pickett's first album is actually just a compilation of various singles and B-sides dating as far back as 1961. Here's the wicked Pickett belting out greasy R&B with the Falcons ("I Found a Love," "Let's Kiss and Make Up") and duetting with Cissy Houston ("Teardrops Will Fall," "Come Home Baby"); he also tries his hand at a bit of Motown-style stomping on "I'm Gonna Cry" and lets a touch of gospel creep into "For Better or Worse. Wicked" Wilson Pickett's debut, IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR, is actually singles recorded between 1961-1965, these tracks compiled together make up the first record for the gritty singer's first time out. The Pickett is backed up here by the Stax band regulars and Steve Cropper plays out his distinctive lead guitar throughout in which helped develop the incredible sound of Otis Redding.

Pickett’s first encounter with Allman was typical of time and type, mistaking him for a gorgeous blond upon seeing him in the back of a car. But once they got to working in the studio together, they bonded instantly. Pickett saw and heard in Duane an equally dedicated student of his chosen musical genre, another perfectionist carving his own distinct path, another iconoclast who couldn’t easily be towed into line, and a gregarious, outgoing person who could not be cowed or awed. Quite how long they kept it going is uncertain; the final mix faded out just after four minutes. But for as long as Pickett and Allman traded off each other, it was Rick Hall’s unenviable task to keep the volume unit meters from peaking.

Near the end of 1967, Pickett began recording at American Studios in Memphis with producers Tom Dowd and Tommy Cogbill, and began recording songs by Bobby Womack. The songs "I'm In Love," "Jealous Love," "I've Come A Long Way," "I'm A Midnight Mover," (a Pickett/Womack co-write), and "I Found A True Love" were Womack-penned hits for Pickett in 1967 and 1968. His final Atlantic single, a cover of Randy Newman's "Mama Told Me Not To Come," was culled from Pickett's 1971 album Don't Knock My Love. American Soul Man.
