One of ABBA's biggest hits, "Fernando" was conceived as a Frida solo track in Swedish, but it was soon realised the track had potential internationally and a version in English was recorded for ABBA. Since no other new ABBA track except "Dancing Queen" had been recorded at the time (and the only question was which one would be released as an A-side first), the B-side had to be sourced from past ABBA releases

Produced by Björn Ulvaeus & Benny Anderson. Originally released as an Anni-Frid Lyngstad solo song in 1975, ABBA re-released this song in 1976 and eventually turned this into one of the best-selling songs of all time. It was written by Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Stig Anderson. Ulvaeus recalled writing the song in the book 1000 UK Hits

ABBA is the third (second internationally) studio album by the Swedish pop group of the same name. It was originally released on 21 April 1975 through Polar Music and featured the hits "Mamma Mia" and "SOS". Following the Eurovision success of "Waterloo", ABBA saw the band gaining worldwide recognition. I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" topped the charts in Australia, as did "Mamma Mia" shortly after. SOS" and "Mamma Mia" became hits in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

ABBA's biggest hit singles worldwide are "Dancing Queen" and "Fernando", with Arrival being their biggest hit studio album. The compilation album Gold: Greatest Hits (1992) has become one of the most popular albums worldwide, with sales of over 30 million copies. ABBA were particularly successful in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, The Soviet Union, The Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Africa, Zimbabwe, the UK, Canada, Argentina, Brazil and the United States.

ABBA then recorded an English version the following year. The song does not appear on any studio album, only greatest hits collections. Bjorn Ulvaeus (from 1000 UK Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh): "That lyric is so banal and I didn't like it. It was a love lyric, someone who loved Fernando, but I inherited the word 'Fernando' and I thought long and hard, what does Fernando tell me?
