Only 2 left in stock (more on the way). The string quartets of Béla Bartók punctuate the evolution of his style and the turning points in his life. The second quartet reflects the period of World War One and his troubled personal life. The fourth explores rhythm, tonality and timbre to produce magnificent and unprecedented sonorities. The sixth expresses unbearable anguish, as his dream of fraternity was shattered by the rise of nationalism and fascism. In this superb set the Jerusalem Quartet brings us the essence of the Bartókian genius. On the basis of this album, they seem to have done rather well. This album comes warmly recommended. 3 people found this helpful.

The String Quartet No. 6, Sz. 114, BB 119, was the final string quartet that Béla Bartók wrote before his death. It was begun in August 1939 in Saanen, Switzerland, where Bartók was a guest of his patron, the conductor Paul Sacher. Shortly after he completed the Divertimento for String Orchestra on the 17th, he started on a commission for his friend, the violinist Zoltán Székely.

Album · 2016 · 12 Songs. 2, 4, & 6 Jerusalem Quartet. 4 by Béla Bartók was written from July to September 1928 in Budapest. It is one of six string quartets by Bartok. The work is in five movements: Allegro. Prestissimo, con sordino. Allegretto pizzicato. This work, like the String Quartet No. 5, and several other pieces by Bartók, exhibits an "arch" structure - the first movement is thematically related to the last, and the second to the fourth with the third movement standing alone

The Jerusalem Quartet performs Bartok's String Quartets Nos 2, 4 and 6. 8 June 2018 - 3:54pm. Submitted by Music Freelance. For his Sixth Quartet, Bartók not only provided his customary metronome markings, but also meticulously entered timings for each successive section of music. The opening viola solo, whose material prefaces each of the succeeding movements, is marked mesto (sad), and Bartók gives it a timing of 50 seconds. The Jerusalem players are pretty much spot-on, yet at this tempo the passage can’t quite convey the full expressive intensity it needs, and it’s worth bearing in mind that composers always hear music in their heads faster than they would like it to be in actual performance.
