When the Queen II album came out in '74, those who heard it were impressed & spiritually uplifted. What became Queen II was done and dusted in that hot month. Realising that as songwriters Mercury and May had radically different lyrical agendas – Brian the guitarist preferring a personal or emotional slant, while Freddie the singer liked to operate in realms of the phantasmagorical – it was decided to give the record a loose concept, splitting the material into ‘White’ and ‘Black’ sides to match the light and shade of the songs. Feller’ flows in segue form with Mercury at the piano picking up the closing three-part harmony to introduce ‘Nevermore’. Freddie and Robin Cable would also play pluck or string piano (again no synthesisers) on a song that deals with relationship breakdown, with a nod at Edgar Allen Poe’s poem The Raven.
Queen II is Queen's second album. It was release in 1974. Side 1 features hard rock songs all written by Brian May, with the exception of Track 4, which was Roger Taylor's. Side 2 is exclusively Freddie. It heavily features prog and is considered their most progressive work. Do you like Queen II? Does Queen II hold up to their other albums? Does the prog bog down the album?
