It’s a hard sentiment to believe: the rapper’s debut mixtape is a poetic eulogy-for her granny, for a mentor, for victims of police brutality. But it also radiates warmth and optimism, full of rich instrumentation, cascading harmonies, finger snaps and baby coos. In the deluge of darkwave and post-punk that flooded Bandcamp in 2016, Jenny Besetzt stood out. Singer John Wollaber’s voice runs miles ahead of the sparse bass, guitar, and pulsating kick drum that chase it through the soundscapes of Authoress Speech and Black Is the Night. Hutchings-who grew up in Barbados and England-recorded the album in Johannesburg, South Africa over the course of a single day, with a septet of local musicians. The nine compositions blur the line between the music of various cultures: from Caribbean calypso to Nguni folk music to the flash of acid jazz.

These are the best of a challenging, rewarding, overall epic year. But the closer you listen, the more complicated the record becomes. While light in tone and sound, Coloring Book also touches on sin, veering track-to-track from God song to flawed human song. Chance parties All Night ; he deserves a Smoke Break ; he’s got No Problem threatening major labels. It’s hard to escape the gravity of an album that offers up an artist’s farewell. That task is even more difficult when the record includes a song entitled Lazarus, or a promotional video laden with sickbed imagery. But when listening to David Bowie’s final studio set, it’s important to avoid letting the singer’s death dominate your thoughts entirely-if only because Blackstar is so creatively alive.

The best moments on Jeffery come when Young Thug focuses on a hook and raps over an unconventional beat. 26. Jenny Hval – Blood Bitch. Menstruation, death and uncontained desire are among the preoccupations of Hval’s fourth album under her own name. Given the title and themes, Blood Bitch is less operatic than you might expect. Best of all is the lightness and nuance to Julia Cumming’s vocals – a quality that adds more texture and emotion than the dishevelled indie nonchalance of their predecessors.

Here are WhatCulture's best heavy releases of 2016: 20. Lost Society - Braindead. Beginning the cream of 2016's crop is Finnish thrashers Lost Society and their third album, Braindead. Musically, this was an immense record for the up-and-coming quartet, abandoning the "speed and thrash 24/7" approach of their previous two releases, making for something much more diverse. If the band continues in this direction for their next.

The album tells the tragic story of Cole's childhood friend, a young man whose stint as a drug dealer ultimately lead to his murder. The Texas native may listen to his critics, but even that won't stop Travis from being Travis. His empty and brittle framework is highlighted by up-and-coming star 21 Savage, whose rapping style rarely moves beyond a low growl; and, with the exception of love song "Feel It," never shows remorse or regret for the crimes he commits on record. Nihilistic" is an easy worldview to assign to hip-hop music that sees little hope in the world or in one's circumstances, but few artists reach Savage's level of joylessness.
