Leadbelly Sings Folk Songs (1989). Lead Belly's Last Sessions (4-CD box set, 1994), recorded late 1948 in New York City; his only commercial recordings on magnetic tape. Lead Belly Sings for Children (1999), including the 1960 Folkways album Negro Folk Songs for Young People in its entirety; five of the six tracks from the 1941 album Play Parties in Song and Dance as Sung by Lead Belly, recorded for Moses Asch; other songs recorded for Asch from 1941 to 1948; and one previously unreleased track, a radio broadcast.

Leadbelly's repertoire for children did not differ all that much from what he played for general audiences, as this compilation makes clear, although he did stress songs that were easy to sing along with. He had faith that kids could appreciate numbers that were a little more sophisticated than the usual nursery rhyme-type schemes - an approach from which many other children's music performers could learn. The material from this album has been reissued as part of the Smithsonian Folkways CD Sings for Children, a recommended alternative to the original LP, as it more than doubles the length of the album with other kid-friendly performances that Moses Asch recorded by Leadbelly in the 1940s.

Leadbelly (1888-1949) - born Huddie Ledbetter; alias Walter Boyd. American blues singer, "King of The Twelve-String Guitar," who twice sang himself out of jails. Ledbetter helped to inspire the folk and blues revivals of the Fifties and Sixties and he was one of the first traditional folk musicians to perform for a city audience  . In 1933 folklorists John A. and Alan Lomax found Leadbelly, and recorded his songs for the Library of Congress in Angola Prison. He appeared to remember every song that he had ever heard. In that time he had been moved out of the sugarcane fields.

The recordings were issued initially on a Musicraft album called Negro Sinful Tunes and have since been reissued by such labels as Stinson, Everest, and Collectables. Lead Belly was convicted of third-degree assault and served an eight-month sentence. Back in New York from 1946 on, Lead Belly continued to record for Folkways, his 1948 recordings later turning up on a series of LPs called Leadbelly's Last Sessions and gathered together into a four-CD box set by in 1994. Negro Folk Songs for Young People.
