The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men is a 1952 action adventure film produced by Walt Disney Productions and RKO Radio Pictures based on the Robin Hood legend, made in Technicolor and filmed in Buckinghamshire, England. It was written by Lawrence Edward Watkin and directed by Ken Annakin. It is the second of Disney's complete live-action films, after Treasure Island (1950), and the first of four films Annakin directed for Disney.
Robin Hood is a legendary heroic outlaw originally depicted in English folklore and subsequently featured in literature and film. According to legend, he was a highly skilled archer and swordsman. In some versions of the legend, he is depicted as being of noble birth, and in modern time he is sometimes depicted as having fought in the Crusades before returning to England to find his lands taken by the Sheriff. In the oldest known versions he is instead a member of the yeoman class.
I had a quarrel② with my abbot③. He was very greedy and rich. He never helped the poor. He forgot God's teachings④. When I told him this, he wanted to punish me. I escaped to the forest. Now I live a simple life. If you want to live a simple life, and help the poor, then come to Sherwood Forest," said Robin. The two men shook hands and promised⑤ to be friends for life. After his adventure in Sherwood Forest, the Sheriff of Nottingham said to his men, "I must capture Robin Hood and destroy him. How can we capture him?" The Sheriff thought for some time. Then he said, "I know how we can capture him. Let's have an archery competition here in Nottingham. The best archers of the region always come to the competition. The prize for the best archer is the famous silver① arrow. One of his men asked, "But will Robin come to the competition?"
Robin Hood had many companions who were known as the Merry Men. One member was Little John who acted as Robin's lieutenant. The group of men and Robin Hood are considered to be outlaws by the sheriff, and hero to the people. All of the first stories of Robin Hood indicate him as wearing scarlet clothes (hence ROBIN hood) and his men wore green.
The Robin Hood ballads reflect the discontent of ordinary people with political conditions in medieval England. They were especially upset about new laws that kept them from hunting freely in forests that were now claimed as the property of kings and nobles. Social unrest and rebellion swirled through England at the time the Robin Hood ballads first became popular. This unrest erupted in an event called the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. By the 1500s, more elaborate versions of the legend had begun to appear. Another old story, known as Robin Hood and the Monk, also began with a quarrel between Robin and John. Robin went into Nottingham to attend church, but a monk recognized him and raised the alarm. Robin killed 12 people before he was captured. When word of his capture reached Robin's comrades in the forest, they planned a rescue.
