Minnie Riperton featuring José Feliciano.

There are numerous collections out there, perhaps a dozen that cover the late and highly influential Minnie Riperton's career. The very best one out there is the double-disc set on the Right Stuff label called Petals: The Minnie Riperton Collection. This one on Stateside is easy to confuse given its similar title - especially since they were released only ten months apart. But the two are not remotely similar in quality

Minnie Julia Riperton-Rudolph (November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979), was an American singer-songwriter best known for her 1975 single "Lovin' You" and her five-octave coloratura soprano range. She is also widely known for her use of the whistle register and has been referred to by the media as the "Queen of the whistle register". Born in 1947, Riperton grew up in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side. As a child, she studied music, drama and dance at Chicago's Lincoln Center.

Les Fleurs' and 'I Am the Black Gold of the Sun' are a triumphant and joyous psychedelic treat. Also included is a duet of 'Light my Fire' with Jose Felliciano. I can't express how much I love Minnie Ripertons's voice; such a beautiful voice, my favourites on this album are: I Am The Gold of The Sun & Les Fleurs - very uplifting songs. Inside My Love beautifully sung. Back Down Memory Lane; I defy anyone who cannot relate to this song.

The selection of songs is pretty accurate for someone new to have an idea of the vast variety of styles that this artist was able to hold.Regarding the record, for a 180g LP compilation that is supposed to sound with all the bells and whistles of a remastered edition, the sound is loud in gain, but just acceptable in terms of EQ and brightness.

Minnie Ripperton was the owner of one of the finest voices in the history of recorded music. Not only did she have a incredible range but she was able to inject the kind of emotion and intimacy into a song that makes it sound as if she is singing to you and no one else. Every single one of the tracks here is a bona-fide classic. Most were written by Minnie herself as well as some of the best writers in 70's soul/funk including Charles Stepney, Lamont Dozier and Stevie Wonder. This is joyous, sexy, funky soul music at its very best and is probably the only album I own that everyone I have played it to has fallen in love with. If Minnie had not died so young I believe she would have gone on to become a household name but her legacy lives on as she influences some of the best singers of today, most notably the super talented Jill Scott. I even heard 'Loving You' sampled on a recent Dubstep track. Minnie lives!
