Kevin Ayers (16 August 1944 – 18 February 2013) was an English singer-songwriter who was a major influential force in the English psychedelic movement. Ayers was a founding member of the pioneering psychedelic band Soft Machine in the mid-1960s, and was closely associated with the Canterbury scene.

This hour-long chronological sampling of Ayers' Harvest and Island discs features several rare single sides (like "Puis-Je?," the French version of "May I?") in addition to some of his best album cuts. With an extensive biographical essay in the liner notes, this is the ideal place to get acquainted with Ayers' work.

Kevin Ayers former of Soft Machine seems to be only remembered among Prog rock fans. That's too bad because many of his solo albums are stellar and sometimes downright odd (which is a good thing). Here we get Ayers' first five solo albums with a nice mastering. The songs themselves and albums vary a bit in quality

Kevin Ayers (born 16 August 1944 in Herne Bay, Kent) is an English singer-songwriter and was a major influential force in the English psychedelic movement. BBC DJ John Peel wrote in his autobiography that "Kevin Ayers' talent is so acute you could perform major eye surgery with i. more . Year: 1983. Style:MLA Chicago APA. "The Kevin Ayers Collection Album.

Of all Kevin Ayers albums this is by far the most difficult to pin down, as it is much more diverse and challenging than the rest of his output. The reason for this is however obvious, this is not a Kevin Ayers album, it is by a band called Kevin Ayers and the Whole World. When you realise that The Whole World consists of David Bedford, Lol Coxhill, Mick Fincher and a certain Mike Oldfield, it starts to make sense why this album should be unique. The various lead instruments appear to be doing their own thing independently while an annoyingly repetitive theme drags them along. For many, this is Kevin Ayers finest album. There is no denying that he is at his most experimental and eclectic here, but for me the results are something of a mixed bag.
