Johanna Bertha Julie Jenny von Westphalen (12 February 1814 – 2 December 1881) was a theater critic, political activist, and the wife of the philosopher Karl Marx. They became engaged in 1836 and married in 1843. They had seven children. Jenny von Westphalen was born in the small town of Salzwedel in Northern Germany to a fairly recently ennobled family that had been elevated into the petty nobility.

In 1848, Marx and Engels published the ‘Manifesto of the Communist Party’, a pamphlet of about thirty pages, with a concise explanation of their ideas. They produced the pamphlet on behalf of the Communists League and was this political party’s programme. He closed the Communist Manifesto with the call: ‘Workers of the world, Unite.

David Riazanov's KARL MARX and FREDERICK ENGELS An Introduction to Their Lives and Work. The great french revolution and its influence upon germany. In Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels we have two individuals who have greatly influenced human thought. The personality of Engels recedes somewhat into the background as compared to Marx. We shall subsequently see their interrelation

Karl Marx was the son of Heinrich Marx, a lawyer, a highly educated, cultured and freethinking man. We know of Marx's father that he was a great admirer of the eighteenth-century literature of the French Enlightenment, and that altogether the French spirit seems to have pervaded the home of the Marxes. In one case we know that Marx's close relatives and the rest of the Jewish community turned to him and asked him to write a petition for them. This happened when he was twenty-four gears old. All this indicates that Marx did not altogether shun his old kin, that he took an interest in the Jewish question and also a part in the struggle for the emancipation of the Jew. This did not prevent him from drawing a sharp line of demarcation between poor Jewry with which he felt a certain propinquity and the opulent representatives of financial Jewry.
