The Gloaming’ was born when Radiohead recorded Kid A during the experimental electronica-only sessions in early 2000, when the band split into teams who worked on different things seperately. Colin and Jonny created an instrumental track, that would serve Thom much later as the basis for working out a melody.
The Gloaming is the debut studio album by Irish band The Gloaming. It was released on 20 January 2014 on Real World Records, except in North America, where it was released on Brassland Records. The album features a mixture of traditional Irish folk music and original compositions
The Gloaming The Gloaming is a collaboration between five musicians named Martin Hayes (violin, fiddle), Thomas Bartlett aka Doveman (piano), Iarla Ó Lionaird (vocals), Dennis Cahill (guitar) and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh (hardanger fiddle). They they range in age from 30something to 50something, that they live in America and Ireland, and that each one has won individual renowned as a master musician. Amhrán na nGleann (The Song of The Glens) World renowned Irish American supergroup The Gloaming return with their highly anticipated third studio album. Produced by Thomas Bartlett (Sufjan Stevens, St. Vincent) and engineered by Patrick Dillett (David Byrne, Laurie Anderson), the album was recorded in New York City at Reservoir Studios.
The Gloaming don’t depend entirely, though, on the peaks and troughs of their seemingly limitless inventive capacity. The Hare is simple and elegant as fiddle soars behind the husky breathlessness of the hardanger. But it’s those songs that haunt the senses. The album seems, at first, to come to a restrained close – in The Old Favourite there are no wide explorations of multi-tonal possibilities, no hypnotic piano sequences, no veering off into additional reels and jigs. The Old Favourite, however is far more subtle than first impressions might indicate.
The five came together to explore new music at Grouse Lodge Studios is West Meath in early 2011.
The really impressive thing is that it feels cohesive, too, and not just by way of individual tracks: the whole album successfully feels pieced together properly. Some songs that I'm used to hearing fast, like 'Allistrum's March,' are slowed down to a crawl, and the effect is stunning. I won't lie: on my first listen I was moved to tears. It's the most beautiful rendition of the song I've heard.
