Derek Bailey (29 January 1930 – 25 December 2005) was an English avant-garde guitarist and figure in the free improvisation movement. Bailey abandoned conventional performance techniques found in jazz, exploring atonality, noise, and whatever unusual sounds he could produce with the guitar. Much of his work was released on his own label Incus Records. In addition to solo work, Bailey collaborated frequently with other musicians and recorded with collectives such as Spontaneous Music Ensemble and Company Contents. 2002 New Sights Old Sounds (Incus). 2003 Soshin with Fred Frith, Antoine Berthiaume (Ambiances Magnetiques) Antoine Berthiaume at the Wayback Machine (archived 10 February 2010)). 2003 Nearly a D with Frode Gjerstad (Emanem).

Derek Bailey by John Eyles, published on June 16, 2017 at All About Jazz. Find more Building a Jazz Library articles. I think playing solo is a second rate activity, really. For me, playing is about playing with other people. In the absence of that, I am happy to play solo, but I don't think there is any comparison. Despite that Bailey quote from a September 2001 interview, no selection of his work should exclude his solo guitar playing. Although most of his other solo recordings are recommended, Incus Taps ticks all the boxes. Originally recorded at home in April and June 1973 and released on four (now impossible to acquire) reel-to-reel tapes, they were later compiled and released on vinyl. The YouTube clip below is a later example of Bailey playing solo and chatting informally in a live context: Company 6 & 7 (Incus, 1992). For me, Company is still the best way for me to work.

Derek Bailey (January 29, 1930 – December 25, 2005) was a free improvising avant-garde guitarist. The most noticeable feature of his style is what appears to be its extreme discontinuity, often from note to note: there may be enormous intervals between consecutive notes, and rather than aspiring to the consistency of timbre typical of most guitar-playing, Bailey interrupts it as much as possible: four consecutive notes, for instance, may be played on an open string.
