Regulate the Chemicals was released on Takehold Records and followed by a summer of extensive touring. In January 2001, Jake Brown left the band. In 2002, Takehold was acquired by Tooth & Nail Records, and the record label would re-release the band's second album, remastered with additional tracks added. In April 2003, Twothirtyeight disbanded on good terms; members choosing to pursue their individual dreams. Lead vocalist Chris Staples went on to front the indie rock band Discover America. The band fully reunited on September 21 to play a show in Atlanta, Georgia, followed by an appearance at Deluna Fest on the 23rd, and.

Regulate the Chemicals opens up with "The Hands of Men," which might be one of the best songs that the band has ever written. It deals with the pain and fear of having a loved one in the hospital with the chance of them dying. I usually love any acoustic song twothirtyeight does, but "Indian in Your Eyes" is easliy the weakest song on the album, with the hardest lyrics to decipher. All in all, Regulate the Chemicals is the closest twothirtyeight came to perfection before You Should Be Living. It shows that simple song layout and guitar work, overlapped with complex lyrics (that don't have any filler included), is a winning combination.

Regulate the Chemicals isn't bad, but the 11 (good) songs blend together to create a forgettable package. I can't even say that the songs distinguish themselves from one another; everything is slow to mid-tempo and it all has the same ingredients. It is because of the lack of any obvious heart that this record feels like a side project; it's like an indie rock record for the sake of being indie so the artists can say they've put one out. It doesn't quite work as a rock album either because it's just different enough to not be straight up rock  . I wish I could say something better about this album because there's glimpses of potential, but even that was nullified by Twothirtyeight's disbanding. Regulate the Chemicals isn't a bad record but don't expect anything remarkable.
