Updated on Jul 06, 2018. McKendree Spring is a progressive folk-rock band, active mainly in the early 1970s. The band consisted of Fran McKendree (vocals and guitar), their first bass player was Larry Tucker (shown in the picture) then Fred Holman took over bass, Dr. Michael Dreyfuss (electric violin, viola, Moog, Arp, Mellotron), Martin Slutsky (electric guitar). Christopher Bishop replaced Holman on bass as of the 1973 release Spring Suite.
Led by Fran McKendree's acoustic strumming and a relatively distinct tenor voice they managed to create some interesting music at times aided by a good choice of material. Surely picking such outstanding songs as Tim Buckley's "Morning Glory" and Tom Rush's "No Regrets" to cover would only require a limited amount of musical competence to succeed. Their interpretations were respectable and depending on the listener's taste they might actually be admirable.

While it may have worked somewhat as a novelty, drums just help in this case. Stronger writing by Fran McKendree on all the original tracks however is the difference between this and other albums. Friends Die Easy" and "Oh Now My Friend" are two of his best. by otismidnight, rateyourmusic.
