Head over Heels is the second studio album by Scottish alternative rock band Cocteau Twins. The album was released in October 1983 by 4AD, and was their first album as a duo of Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie. It featured the band's signature sound of "Guthrie’s lush guitars under Fraser’s mostly wordless vocals" and is considered an archetype of early ethereal wave music.

Cocteau Twins were founded in Grangemouth, Scotland in 1980 by Robin Guthrie, Will Heggie and Elizabeth Fraser. Will Heggie departed the group in 1983, and Simon Raymonde joined in 1984. Over the course of sixteen years and more than a dozen records, they became famous for their trademark ethereal soundscapes and soaring vocal melodies that influenced subsequent generations of post-punk musicians. The group officially disbanded in 1998 while recording the follow-up album to the 1996 record Milk and Kisses.

The album introduces a variety of different shadings and approaches to the incipient Cocteaus sound, pointing the band towards the exultant, elegant beauty of later releases. Opening number "When Mama Was Moth" demonstrates the new musical range nicely; Fraser's singing is much more upfront, while Guthrie creates a bewitching mix of dark guitar notes and sparkling keyboard tones, with percussion echoing in the background.

About Head Over Heels. The second studio album by the influential Scottish ethereal wave band was named one of the most eccentric British albums of all time by Mojo magazine in 2003. The album shows a more varied sound than on Garlands and hints at the greatness the band would achieve on later releases. Head Over Heels Q&A. More Cocteau Twins albums. Head Over Heels rarely tops anybody’s list of favourite Cocteau Twins albums but it’s probably the one that should command the most respect. Created in the face of adversity, the album remains a perfect example of how the influence of heroes doesn’t have to mean creating a facsimile; it means sharing an aesthetic and a determination to forge ahead, develop and grow. As Mark Lanegan pointed out to The Quietus, you can’t escape your influences. Quite so but Head Over Heels demonstrates emphatically how to transcend them.
