Johann Wilhelm Hässler is remembered by musicologists for his contest in organ playing with Mozart, but these première recordings show him to be an astonishing enigma whose predilection for composing miniatures reached a pinnacle with the 360 Preludes in All Keys. This remarkable tour de force shows an amazing control of textures and not insignificant humor, its style ranging from . Bachs Empfindsamkeit to prophetic insights anticipating Schumann.

The monumental cycle of 360 Preludes in all keys Op. 47 (1817) by . Hässler (1747–1822) is an astonishing work; this opus is among his best compositions. Hässler intended the preludes to fulfill primarily a pedagogical task. Even though the cycle is a true cycle, rather than a mere collection of unrelated pieces, the individual preludes, especially from the middle, are well suited for individual performance. Another way of performance, sure to delight any audience, is to play them in groups of 15, a key or two at a time More Vitlaus von Horn on the Grand Piano label (GP686-87).
One of the most unusual of Hässler's compositions is a cycle of 360 preludes in all keys Op. 47, published in 1817. This massive cycle that lasts for over 95 minutes, and my friend Dmitry Feofanov played the world premiere of this work in Erfurt on September 23, 2012, and in Moscow on September 26, 2012. Dmitry was kind enough to lend me the score. I will record the Preludes in 2017.
Hässler was born in Erfurt. He first studied under his uncle Johann Christian Kittel, who was an organist at Erfurt. 50, a cantata, chamber works and songs.
