Earl Hines Plays Duke Ellington. Earl Hines Plays Duke Ellington is a compilation double album set featuring solo recordings by pianist Earl Hines performing compositions by Duke Ellington which were originally released as a series of four LPs that Hines recorded for the Master Jazz label in four separate sessions between 1971 and 1975 and rereleased on the New World label on LP in 1988 and on CD in 1992. It was followed by a second volume in 1997.

Ellington was an outstanding composer. He wrote thousands of works, composing popular songs, art songs, a wide variety of instrumentals, suites, symphonic works, movie and TV scores, and music for ballet – all of a very high quality. But to say merely that Ellington was a great composer ignores his achievement as a musician. Ellington is probably the only musician whose name has been associated with a particular style "Ellingtonia". This style does not imply a specific tempo or specific mood, but also a certain standard of quality

The Duke Ellington Orchestra was struggling to stay together, and Ellington’s profile had fallen considerably due to what many considered to be an outmoded style. Swing and the big band era fell out after World War II; many were turning to the rising Sinatra and the era of jazz crooners. Ellington was having a hard time booking gigs, as a struggling economy was turning to smaller combo bands.
