Handel: Water Music Suites Nos. 1-3, HWV348-350 Music for the Royal Fireworks, HWV351. These digital recordings from 1983 and 1991 make a fine bargain at mid price. John Eliot Gardiner and his period instrument ensemble produce a lovely, smooth sound in these very well played performances, which use Handel's versions for strings and winds. Balances are fine; playing and recording collaborate to produce a treasurable clarity in which every line registers. For those who like their Handel sounding vital yet genteel, this is an ideal release. This music is neither slow nor uninvolving, it's just simply excellent and competes very well with modern music.

Handel composed his Music for the Royal Fireworks while working for George II in 1749. The Treaty of Aix-La-Chapelle was signed to mark the ending of the War of the Austrian succession and the piece was composed to accompany the royal celebrations. A favourite among the royals, Handel, who had written the wonderful Coronation Anthems for George II and the Water Music for his father, George I, was commissioned to provide the music . So naturally it rained, most of the fireworks refused to light, and the few that did light caused the staging to catch fire.
