The Four Pennies were an English, 1960s pop group, most notable for their 1964 UK chart-topping song "Juliet". The Four Pennies were probably the most commercially successful UK vocal/instrumental group that failed to chart in the United States, during the so-called British Invasion. Following the UK chart-topping success of "Juliet", the Four Pennies racked up subsequent 1964 UK hits with their original "I Found Out The Hard Way" and a cover version of Lead Belly's, "Black Girl". They also issued an album, Two Sides of Four Pennies, which, as was customary for British acts of the time, mostly ignored their hit singles

The World of the Four Pennies. Overview (current section).

The Four Pennies started out as the Lionel Morton Four, taking their name from their singer, who had served as a choir boy in a cathedral in his hometown of Blackburn, Lancashire, England, during his youth. The band - not to be confused with the stateside recording artists of the same name - also included Stoke-on-Trent native Mike Wilsh on piano, Oldham's Fritz Fryer on lead guitar, and Alan Buck of Brierfield on drums. Morton, in addition to singing, played the rhythm guitar. The band's third single, a three-hankie ballad called "I Found Out the Hard Way," wasn't as successful as "Juliet," but it did climb nicely into the Top 20 in Great Britain. The Four Pennies' pleasant but lightweight sound makes for a reasonably upbeat album for the first nine songs, long on melodies and ballads - which is what the Four Pennies did best - and light on the amperage.
