CD 5: art ensemble of chicago : the third decade. Prayer For Jimbo Kwesi 09:47. There are dozens of pulled quotes, complete album art, and photographs inside to boot. Sure, this is for AEC completists, but it is also a peerless, necessary addition to paired legacies of the band and label that it will resonate with virtually compelled, collectively created, aesthetically advanced improvised music.
In his brief liner essay introducing this amazing 21-disc retrospective, ECM founder Manfred Eicher states that he wanted to work with the Art Ensemble of Chicago after hearing late-'60s recordings by its members and witnessing their legendary performances in Paris during the era - which resulted in 15 recordings for various labels. Eicher didn't get his chance for nearly a decade, but the relationship between label, band, and colleagues continues.
When I heard the Art Ensemble’s ‘Full Force’ album (included here) as an impressionable kid, its expressions of freedom changed my life by exposing me to the possibilities of sound. I haven’t been the same since; it’s nice to think someone else might be affected by these geniuses decades later.

With their first ECM album, the widely-acclaimed Nice Guys, the Art Ensemble’s revolutionary and polystylistic ancient to the future mix of musics - from the deeply spiritual to the fiercely experimental - was illuminated in new detail in Manfred Eicher’s panoramic production, and the stage set for many adventures to follow.

For half a century now, The Art Ensemble Of Chicago have been a cartoonish presence in the usually austere world of avant-garde music. In concert, they turned free improvisation into a compelling pantomime – saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell might have vegetation growing from his hat; trumpeter Lester Bowie would wear a white lab coat; bassist Malachi Favors and drummer Don Moye would wear tribal body paint, while Joseph Jarman once came on stage wearing naught but a saxophone sling.
Illuminated by a 300-page booklet that includes rare photos, personal essays, and the original liner notes from every album, The Art Ensemble of Chicago and Associated Ensembles excavates a staggering amount of magnificence.
