Symphony No. 9 by Gustav Mahler was written between 1908 and 1909, and was the last symphony that he completed. It is actually his tenth symphony, as Mahler gave no ordinal number to his symphony with voices Das Lied von der Erde. A typical performance takes about 75 to 90 minutes. Though the work is often described as being in the key of D major, the tonal scheme of the symphony as a whole is progressive. While the opening movement is in D major, the finale is in D♭ major.

Hall on 19th March and Mahler Symphony N. under Markus Stenz, Principal Guest Conductor, in repeated performances in Manchester and Sheffield in April. The way in which the long, lingering finale is engineered towards its final climax is superb.

While by no means a terrible Mahler Ninth, this recording by Gustav Kuhn with the Marchigiana Philharmonic Orchestra is still a weak Mahler Ninth. The playing is weak: the Marchigiana Philarmonic is just about able to get most of the notes and barely able to get through the whole work. It sounds nearly exhausted by the climax of the opening Andante con moto, nearly somnambulistic in the following Ländler, nearly comatose in the following Rondo Burleske, and nearly dead in the closing Adagio
