Little Boots, Nocturnes. by Little Boots - 10 Tracks - 50:07. Release date 05/06/2013.
Little Boots marched onto the UK dance scene with a handful of singles that led to her 2009 debut album, Hands. The record, replete with disco-stitched synthpop, and its bubbly creator Victoria Christina Hesketh, built a nifty cache of critical praise and commercial success. Misunderstandings, mind games, and perseverance were all common themes throughout her Hands. Sophomore offering Nocturnes continues to play with this narrative of strife and redemption, albeit by departing from the ’70s disco era in favor of a ’90s house-inspired wall of beats.
Having carved out a niche on the increasingly crowded dancefloor amongst a gaggle of similarly inclined acts like Ellie Goulding, La Roux, Robyn, and Lady Gaga with such cuts as "Stuck on Repeat," and "Earthquake," Victoria Hesketh aka Little Boots has found a more personal niche within the genre on Nocturnes
On Nocturnes, Little Boots (. Victoria Hesketh) walks a fine line between the ‘90s grooves of St. Etienne and the 21st-century glitz of Lady GaGa. She does it with a cool finesse captured in gossamer-light vocals that never lose their teasing charm, even when her lyrics turn angry or wistful. The album’s sleek flow benefits from Hesketh’s recent gigs as a DJ, as well as from Tim Goldsworthy’s smart, incisive production
Nocturnes (Little Boots album). 2013 studio album by Little Boots. Sonically, she stated the album "definitely feels more representative of me of an artist, at least now in 2012.
The major difference, obviously, is that the hype around Little Boots has now completely dissipated- as have at least some of Little Boots’ industry ties; Nocturnes is out under her own On Repeat label. It’s not a bad thing, exactly; where before Hesketh was all but set up for failure even if she did manage the crossover, she’s now able to settle into a more attainable level of expectations . When the metaphors don’t falter, other things do: Strangers comes off as an offcut from Kylie Minogue’s Aphrodite, too tired even for a victory lap album. All for You is sleepier still.
