Curtis is the debut album by American soul musician Curtis Mayfield, released in September 1970. Produced by Mayfield, it was released on his own label Curtom Records. The musical styles of Curtis moved further away from the pop-soul sounds of Mayfield's previous group The Impressions and featured more of a funk and ed sound. The album's subject matter incorporates political and social concerns of the time.
Mayfield is truly one of the greats, a pioneer in funk and socially aware R&B. He received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. Inducted into Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 (Solo Performer) and previously (1991) as a member of The Impressions. Inducted into Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2000.

After The Impressions, Curtis Mayfield started a prolific solo career, releasing a series of albums starting with his debut, CURTIS. After Curtis Mayfield left The Impressions in 1970, he launched his solo career with his debut album CURTIS. Including the hit songs (Don’t Worry) If There’s A Hell Below, We’re All Going To Go, and Move On Up, the album reached the Billboard Pop Albums Chart Top 20 and was certified gold.
And Curtis Mayfield defined The Impressions, as lead singer, writer and producer, molding a quintet, then trio, of musically underdeveloped teenagers into a unit that would, at one time, have an astonishing run of R & B and pop chart successes, including 19 consecutive R & B hits, 12 of them crossing over into pop. But, more importantly, Mayfield fashioned The Impressions as soul music’s social conscience. But not until Mayfield took command did The Impressions repertoire become truly atypical. His impact on the formative years is something Fred Cash has never forgotten, even 60 years later. He recalls those first rehearsals on Chicago’s South Side. The Impressions became an emotional center of the tribute album to Mayfield in 2000, The documentary Movin' On Up included - interviews with Sam Gooden and Fred Cash and video performances of the group's greatest hits.
