Joe Lovano heads a lineup with pianist Michel Petrucciani, bassist Dave Holland, and late drummer Ed Blackwell. It's hard-edged, explosive playing all around, with Blackwell laying down his patented bombs while Petrucciani and Holland converge behind Lovano's dynamic solos.

It's an unabashedly adventurous and risky project, and it works frighteningly well". All compositions by Joe Lovano except as indicated.

From the Soul is a 1992 jazz album by saxophonist and composer Joe Lovano, generally regarded as being his masterpiece so far. It was recorded with a studio band rather than Lovano's working group; it is notable for his only encounter with Michel Petrucciani (who plays in a more abstract, Paul Bleyish style than was usual with him), and for being one of Ed Blackwell's final recordings. Evolution" (Lovano) –8:59. Portrait of Jenny" (Burdge, Robinson) –7:56. Lines and Spaces" (Lovano) –6:20.

Joseph Salvatore Lovano was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 29, 1952 and grew up in a very musical household. His dad, Tony, aka Big T, was a barber by day and a big-toned tenor player at night. Big T," along with his brothers Nick and Joe, other tenor players, and Carl, a bebop trumpeter, made sure Joe's exposure to Jazz and the saxophone were early and constant.

The saxophonist Joe Lovano has regularly spoken of his malleable quintet Us Five as a band that's capable of doing and playing anything, and on the group's brand-new Cross Culture (Blue Note), its third album, that's never seemed more apparent. The group tackles the Ellington/Strayhorn classic "Star Crossed Lovers," but the other ten pieces are all Lovano originals-some of which he's recorded previously in other contexts-yet they all feel more like superflexible settings or structures than rigid compositions, allowing the players great internal latitude.
