If I was going to recommend an ambient-style cassette to someone I would start with this one. The sound is deep and mysterious, perhaps owing to the process of "sampling and resampling" described in the liner notes, which involves cassette dubs as well as digital recording, and the inevitable "pedals." The tape aspect slightly recalls Eno's work around the Music for Films era but it's a much grittier sound. Natural sounds (wind and water) as well as voices and instruments come to your ears swaddled in layers of white noise and reverberation. The first and last tracks are my favorite. Trou De Trou has a ritual, didgeridoo-flavored atmosphere --very dense and eerie -- but it's a tonal work, with a simple song structure. The echoing layers evoke the elements but also hundreds of old cassette decks looping and feeding back. Very nice.
