Joe Lovano, one of the great contemporary saxophonists, has taken a fresh look at this famous material in a partnership with composer, conductor and musicologist Gunther Schuller, who played French horn on the original Miles dates. Working with his own 10-piece, Lovano has mingled new material - echoing the original ideas - with treatments of Birth of the Cool classics Moon Dreams, Move and Boplicity.

Streams of Expression is the 20th studio album by American jazz musician Joe Lovano to be released on the Blue Note label. It was released in 2006 and features a five-part "Streams of Expression Suite," three-part "Birth of the Cool Suite," and three other shorter works. The "Birth of the Cool Suite" was conducted by Gunther Schuller and utilizes melodic themes inspired by Miles Davis' work from his 1948 and 1950 nonet. The album also features George Garzone, Ralph Lalama, Gary Smulyan, and Tim Hagans.

Joe Lovano is a genuine innovator. He's uninterested in novelty for novelty's sake and he's very, very ambitious for his music. He makes things more interesting for everybody, including himself, by (no apologies for the pun) digging foundations. The album opens, however, with the first two movements of Lovano's "Streams Of Expression" suite. They're something of an overture- sampling, summarising, and anticipating what's to come. The ensemble number "Second Nature" underlines the continuity Lovano seeks between 1948's implied dissonances and the overt dissonance pioneered in the 1960s. The magnificent rhythm trio do heroic work through succeeding passages where the hornmen first alternate, and then play all at the same time, each with his own improvised line in an experiment perilous.

Joe Lovano can always be relied upon to switch gears from one project to another, constantly exploring new music and fresh variations of older pieces. On Streams of Expression, he contributes the five-part "Streams of Expression Suite," a three-part "Birth of the Cool Suite" (conducted by Gunther Schuller) that uses themes from Miles Davis' 1948-1950 Nonet, and three briefer works.
