Jars of Clay is a Christian rock band from Nashville, Tennessee. They met at Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois. Jars of Clay consists of Dan Haseltine on vocals, Charlie Lowell on piano and keyboards, Stephen Mason on lead guitars and Matthew Odmark on rhythm guitars. Although the band has no permanent drummer or bass guitarist, Jeremy Lutito and Gabe Ruschival of Disappointed by Candy fill these roles for live concerts.

Jars of Clay's eponymous first full-length album is characterized by a combination of drum loops and acoustic guitar strumming that would become an early trademark of the band. Strings are also used prominently in most of the songs. The album features sonic influences as diverse as Gregorian chants, mandolin, and gothic layered vocals. Notably, Jars of Clay is considered to be a landmark album in Christian rock, even though very few electric guitars are used, leading some to categorize Jars of Clay as folk-rock, alternative folk, or even pop instead. The album was listed at No. 22 in the 2001 book, CCM Presents: The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music. Honest, intense, poetic, and harmonic with sonic influences as diverse as Gregorian chants, mandolin, and gothic layered vocals, Jars of Clay was a refreshing break from the pessimism and alterna-angst that dominated the mid-90s music scene. Jars of Clay began at Greenville College in Greenville, IL when four young lads met and discovered friendship through music. They were majors in "Contemporary Christian Music", a somewhat recent department in the college. Charlie Lowell, Dan Haseltine and Matt Bronleewe had been there for the year of 1992 and played in various bands as well as producing their own studio projects.

Inland is the eleventh full-length studio album by rock band Jars of Clay, which was released on August 27, 2013 by Gray Matters label. The album was produced by Tucker Martine at Flora Recording & Playback in Portland, Oregon. The album has seen significant charting successes, and has garnered critical acclamation. Jars of Clay manage to put a bit of spirit into their rock & roll. But the spirit isn't one of deceased loved ones or demons, but of religious enlightenment. This album revolves around the band's Christian beliefs, but never comes off as preachy or judgmental. It includes the hit "Flood" and also covers such topics as child abuse and the manipulation of modern man. Produced with the help of Adrian Belew, this album shines.
