Return of the Mac is just 10 songs and four interludes, and it's over in 40 minutes, barely half the length of the average major-label event-rap album. The beats all come from the New York-based producer and frequent Mobb collaborator Alchemist, whose intuitive chemistry with Prodigy makes for one of the most fruitful rapper-producer pairings in a while. Here, Alchemist creates a warm, organic bedrock for Prodigy's cold, weary monotone; in the producer's hands, the rapper's weathered crackle of a voice feels like a natural outgrowth of the landscape.

Prodigy's solo album, Return of the Mac, is the return to form that follows with sinister beats, cold rhymes, and most importantly the Alchemist. The Mobb's long-time producer only handled one cut on Blood Money, but here he's in charge of every track. Steeped in history, the rapport between rapper and producer creates a world unto itself, one reflected in the album's artwork, where bravado style and the good life shine in a world of broken concrete and busted windows.

Return of the Mac is the first collaboration studio album by American rapper Prodigy of Mobb Deep and producer The Alchemist, released on March 27, 2007 through E1 Music. The album was intended to be a mixtape serving as a prequel to Prodigy's next album, . Pt. 2, but was released as a traditional album due to the unexpected level of quality of the record. The album was produced by The Alchemist (who is featured on the cover) and it features songs sampled from the Blaxploitation era.

Prodigy, following this advice, wisely titled his album Return of the Mac, saying nothing at all about a "comeback". A "comeback" implies an uphill battle waged against unforeseen and uncontrollable circumstances. Return of the Mac, as a title, exudes a sense of control and an insinuation that Prodigy has his eye on reclaiming a favorable position in the rap game. Last year, when Mobb Deep released Blood Money on 50 Cent's G-Unit label, many (including me) wondered if the Mobb had lost their individuality. Many (including me) surmised that the Mobb had gotten sidetracked by Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson's vision instead of sticking to their own.
