African reggae was the great roots hope to counter the "invasion" and domination of Jamaican music, but it never developed a distinctive musical tag because the style is so strongly associated with Jamaica. While Fly African Eagle was designed to celebrate African reggae as an alternative, the compilation is more revealing in showing why it foundered. Alpha Blondy's "Cocody Rock," for example, is a perfectly good reggae song but nothing more than that

The collection of songs across the African Princess riddim is yet another worthwhile juggling project coming from Irie Ites Records. Dennis Brown & Trinity – African Princess. The ever busy crew of French Irie Ites record label comes up with their 18th riddim selection called African Princess Riddim. It’s actually an uptempo 1990s roots riddim Sly & Robbie did for producer Roy Francis of Mixing Lab fame, which Irie Ites first used for Trinity’s 2013 released album Eye To Eye, more in particular for the song African Princess by Dennis Brown & Trinity, an answer version to Dennis Brown’s Mood For Love

The Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album is an award presented at the Grammy Awards, a ceremony that was established in 1985 and originally called the Gramophone Awards, to recording artists for quality works in the reggae music genre.

African reggae is concentrated mainly in the West and South, and it shows in the lineup. Another thing is that two major names are absent. Mo'Kalimity & the Wizards rock along sweetly. South Africa's Zoro punches up the beat. Ba Cissoko and Tiken Jah Fokoly pull off a good reggae/kora mix, while Majek Fashek lets his Nigerianness hang out all Kuti-like on "Man of Sorrow". Fashek's lyrics are preachy but faced with horns like that I can get over it. This is Putumayo, so you know the compilation is going to be suitable for children, unless, of course, you object to your child being told to love Jah and hie itself tout de suite to Zion. A good-natured introductory disc
