How is it possible that planets rotate around the Sun in a fixed path without deviating into any other planet? Those which were likely to cross other orbits and crash, did so billions of years ago in the young Solar System. These planets gained enough mass that its gravity helped clear out the path in its orbit around the sun. That’s how planets formed and the gravity cleaned out the inner solar system where the planets are located. Luckily, we don’t have to worry anymore about any dangerous mass of asteroids still present in inner solar system So how do these planets maintain their respective orbits around the sun? Every planet is in something called 'free fall', much like how the International Space Station (ISS) stays in orbit around Earth rather than just falling back to Earth.

The last two sections cover the causes for low abiotic O2 abundances expected in Earth’s early atmosphere, and the (biological) origin of the current high concentrations of O2 and O3. Implications for the detectability of biological activity on extrasolar planets are discussed.

Understanding the forces at play in keeping the planets in orbit around the sun is crucial when you're getting to grips with the basics of astrophysics. Many people know that the planets in Earth's solar system move around the sun in orbits. This orbit creates the days, years and seasons on the Earth. However, not everyone is aware of why the planets orbit around the sun and how they remain in their orbits. There are two forces that keep the planets in their orbits.

It orbits around the sun and it travels with the sun around the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Earth rotates on its axis, the axis of rotation undergoes precession, the Earth orbits around the Sun, the Earth moves with the Sun in the latter's orbit around the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy, the Earth and the Sun move along with the Milky Way Galaxy towards the Andromeda Galaxy.

The Sun's gravity pulls on the planets, just as Earth's gravity pulls down anything that is not held up by some other force and keeps you and me on the ground. Heavier objects (really, more massive ones) produce a bigger gravitational pull than lighter ones, so as the heavyweight in our solar system, the Sun exerts the strongest gravitational pull. Now if the Sun is pulling the planets, why don't they just fall in and burn up? Well, in addition to falling toward the Sun, the planets are moving sideways. This is the same as if you have a weight on the end of a string.
