There's a school of thought that says there's no reason for a longtime member of a working band to make a solo album unless they want to do something they can't do within the context of the group. Dale Crover has been playing drums with the Melvins for over 30 years, and while it's hard to imagine what he couldn't do within the context of that group, well known for their eccentric streak, one can honestly say that his first full-length solo album, 2017's The Fickle Finger of Fate, doesn't sound quite like a Melvins record, or at least not most of the time.
But on The Fickle Finger of Fate, Crover is now front and center, and it’s a bizarre place for him to be. He wrote, played, and recorded most of the album himself, and in this way, it’s almost melancholic in how it plays like an old demo, like a tape your friend might’ve handed you in 1992. Only six of the 20 tracks are longer than three minutes. The production is muffled, Crover’s voice hooded with noise. While the album spans a few genres, it doesn’t develop them fully: some of the shorter tracks like String Bean and Prismo beg to be fleshed out into full songs.
The Fickle Finger of Fate is an ambitious 20 tracks long and includes several interludes. Crover played most of the instruments on the record, including guitar, keyboards, drums and vocals. Guests include Redd Kross’ Steven McDonald, Dan Southwick (Crover’s bandmate in his Altamont project), and Crover’s 11-year-old daughter, Scarlett, who assists with violin, percussion and vocals.
