Despite this, both Mix-Up and The Voice of America - rather similar records that were released back to back in 1979 and 1980 - only helped solidify Cabaret Voltaire's status as an integral part of the extended frisson of 1978-1982 post-punk, so if they had ceased to exist before their best work, it would still be very. correct to refer to them as "important. "Yes, important, but were they any good?") Mix-Up, their first album, impressively harnesses noise, primitive rhythm box percolations, tape loops, garbled vocals, and blasts of Farfisa.

Mix-Up (Cabaret Voltaire album). Redirected from Mix-Up). Mix-Up is the debut studio album by English band Cabaret Voltaire. It was released on 23 October 1979, through record label Rough Trade. The album contains a cover of The Seeds' song "No Escape". Writing in Smash Hits in 1979, Red Starr said the album was an "intriguing but only occasionally attractive array of verbal and musical images". Starr went on to say that it sounded like "pointless backroom self indulgence".

Cabaret Voltaire's Mix Up, was one of the most inspirational music I found at the time. Once I heard this, it opened up the love for 'the other side of music'. The choreography of sounds and rhythms creating a view of its own. Yes, like a soundtrack. Quite where that leaves us as far as 'Mix-Up' is concerned, I'm really not sure. A fabulously fertile breeding site for a music (irrefutable no 2 - Cabaret Voltaire are not a pop music entity) such as 'Mix-Up'.
That is not to say this is not an appealing listen, to fans of post-punk, analogue electronic music and lo-fi in general there is plenty to enjoy. this pretty much sums up the start of their sound, deffo not their best but without it they wouldn't have done all of the other groundbreaking stuff. Sabottheory August 5th 2010. If Red Mecca is even better than this, well, holy shit.
