Asahina, Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra JJGD-2014-1 Bruckner: Symphony N. - I. Moderato.
Takashi Asahina (1908-2001), founder and long-time conductor of the Osaka Philharmonic, apparently became interested in the symphonies of Bruckner after meeting Wilhelm Furtwangler in the early 1950's. I believe he recorded the symphonies three times. The most recent of these are the early 1990's recordings included in this set. My only criticism applies to the 6th symphony, which sounds somewhat muddled at some points, especially in the opening movement. For the rest, the sound quality, playing and interpretations are first-rate. I would rate this set ahead of Wand or either Jochum.
Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 7 in E major (WAB 107) is one of his best-known symphonies. It was written between 1881 and 1883 and was revised in 1885. It is dedicated to Ludwig II of Bavaria. The premiere, given under Arthur Nikisch and the Gewandhaus Orchestra in the opera house at Leipzig on 30 December 1884, brought Bruckner the greatest success he had known in his life. The symphony is sometimes referred to as the "Lyric", though the appellation is not the composer's own, and is seldom used.
