Murray Street is the twelfth studio album by American rock band Sonic Youth, released on June 25, 2002 by DGC Records. Murray Street is the first album by the band to feature Jim O'Rourke as an official fifth member to bolster the group's sound. Recording began in August 2001 in the band's Echo Canyon studio in New York City, following their final NYC Ghosts and Flowers/Goodbye to the 20th Century tour

One of the young girls on the album's cover is Coco Hayley Gordon Moore, Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon's daughter.

Virtually every album Sonic Youth has released since the underrated Goo has been hailed as a return to form. However, Murray Street, their second collaboration with Jim O'Rourke (and their first with him as a full member of the group), not only recalls their past glories but explores new territory. Freed from the trendy agendas that marred A Thousand Leaves and NYC Ghosts & Flowers, the group revisits the complex, transcendent guitar epics that made them underground rock heroes in the first place

Sonic Youth, without a doubt, is an amazing band that is completely away from my standards of Grunge back in the day, and was certainly an outsider in that movement. This album, which is relatively "new" is a great point to start listening to Sonic Youth if you are a fanatic of Post-Rock sound and Ambient music. My opinion however is entirely based as a first-time listener, because as you might have noticed, I'm not that experienced when it comes to Sonic Youth or other releases by them, but this album certainly triggered my interest in this guys. In the summer of 2002, Murray Street was released: Many critics declared the album to be their finest work in over a decade. But let's see what an Average Joe has to say about them. The album kicks off with The empty page, A very mellow, easy going song with a very catchy bass line.

Murray Street" might be Sonic Youth's tightest, well put-together album since "Daydream Nation," a short but sweet collection that thankfully doesn't overstay its welcome. With the first half of "Murray Street," I kept hearing great songs that made me wonder when the other shoe was going to drop. Empty Page" is such an exciting and promising start to this album, and the way "Rain on Tin"'s guitars sync up reminded me of what I love most about.
