It would have been impossible to gauge at the time of the performance, but the set list of Live at the Cellar Door is a non-stop string of what would become some of Young's many timeless classics, punctuated by the sound of the unthinkably small audience clapping politely as he wove through 15 magical compositions on spare acoustic guitar and occasional.
Neil Young was in the middle of a major career transition when he played a six-show stand at the Cellar Door in Washington . in late November and early December 1970. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young had quietly split up in July, less than a year after playing their first live gigs. The group made him a superstar, but he was ready to stand on his own two feet and the success of After the Goldrush that August proved that was not going to be a problem. Young plays Cinnamon Girl on piano for one of the very few times in his long career. The shows also featured the live debuts of Old Man and See the Sky About to Rain. In This Article: Neil Young.
Neil Young is the self-titled debut studio album by Canadian musician Neil Young following his departure from Buffalo Springfield in 1968, issued on Reprise Records. Some sources place the album's release date on January 22, 1969, while other sources have the release date as Young's 23rd birthday, November 12, 1968. It was then partially remixed and re-released in November 1969, but at no time has the album ever charted on the Billboard 200.
By the end of 1970, Neil Young was replacing his identity as former member of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, and becoming the solo performer we know today, playing a series of six shows at Washington . After the band had split up in July, Young released After The Gold Rush, which succeeded in boosting his name and reputation quickly. Young took a break from shows in 1970 to focus on new material, until he eventually booked two nights at Carnegie Hall for December. To prepare for these big solo shows, Young chose to rehearse with six gigs at Washington, .
Recorded at the Cellar Door in Washington DC over a three-day period from November 30 to December 2, 1970, the latest in Neil Young’s archives series hits the record store shelves in vinyl format, lagging the CD by a few weeks. If you were patient enough to wait, you will be highly rewarded. The epitome of sparse production, the tracks all feature Young on guitar or piano, and while a hint of tape hiss creeps in from time to time, his voice is vibrant, dripping with decay and overtones, in the way that only a magnificent analog recording can – warts and all. Fortunately, the warts are very few, and on one level, kudos to Young for leaving them in. If this were a Katy Perry album, it would all be pristinely pitch corrected.
