While a concerto is generally a piece for an instrument or instruments with orchestral accompaniment, some works for piano alone have been written with the seemingly contradictory designation concerto for solo piano. Although various "concert" pieces have been written across history (such as Liszt's Trois études de concert and Grand solo de concert), concertos for solo piano are very rare

Chopin's Piano Concerto 1 transmits the various emotion into my innermost. I love this concerto so much, especially 1st movement. In my opinion Yundi Li is the best interpreter of this piece. This piece of music captures my heart, and (oh dear) brings tears to my eyes, has done since I was a kid. I don't think it is the most technical of piano concerto's (I see that many 'muso's' seem to judge music, not by it's beauty, but by how near impossible it is to play), it is quite simply Beautiful. This is one of the most sophisticated piano concerto's ever written. It contains some amazing motifs that are unlike anything written before or since. Brahms was at the peak of his career when he composed this concerto, and it shows. I Think of this as one of the most complete piano concertos ever made. Brahms merges himself with the future and the past.

Bartók: The Concerto Album. But they've done more than cheat; they've also dropped the first of the three piano concertos, which is inexplicable because they have two in their catalog: Peter Donohoe's edgy 1992 recording with Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Symphony, and Daniel Barenboim's muscular 1967 recording with Pierre Boulez and the New Philharmonia. That issue aside, the results are mixed both in terms of performance and sound quality

Grieg: Piano Concerto, Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. Remastered, Hybrid SACD. Rubinstein was never satisfied with his 1956 recording of the Grieg Concerto, with the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alfred Wallenstein. The performance was rather perfunctory, with an undistinguished orchestral contribution, and dry, constricted sonics. Rubinstein was so pleased with this recording, that he issued a bold statement which appeared on the album cover: "In the rare coincidence of sound, balance, and performance of conductor, orchestra, and soloist, this is the most perfect recording I have made. Rubinstein recorded surprisingly little of Rachmaninoff's music. Among that composer's works, however, the Second Concerto had pride of place in Rubinstein's repertoire.

The piano is such a versatile instrument, that naturally everyone wants to write for it. But today we’re getting down to the exceptional stuff: this is a list of the best pieces ever written for piano (no questions asked). The heart-stoppingly beautiful first movement of Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight’ Sonata is the most famous from his work, and was described by composer Hector Berlioz as a ‘lamentation’.
