The Blake Babies toured the United States and Europe, eventually achieving a moderate amount of notice, particularly among listeners of college age who were appreciative of the group's "intelligent" brand of rock music. The band's music (released on the independent North Carolina-based record label Mammoth Records) received little airplay on commercial radio, instead being played primarily on college radio stations  . Spin Earwig Demos, a new vinyl LP featuring recordings the beloved Boston indie-rock trio Blake Babies taped in early March of 1988, and you’re captivated anew by the fresh, honest sound of a sparky young band from Boston. Bless my soul, what’s wrong with me? Everybody hates me, Juliana Hatfield sings on Don’t Suck My Breath, which opens the new album in a version only slightly rawer than the one featured on Earwig, the trio’s 1989 Mammoth label debut. I haven’t listened since we made them, she confesses during a telephone interview covering the album’s arrival, as well as two concerts the Blake Babies will play in Boston on Saturday for small, select audiences who crowd-funded the LP’s production. I know I have to listen to them at some point, she continues, laughing softly. I’m afraid to go back.

Earwig (Blake Babies album). Studio album by Blake Babies. March 1988 - July 1989.

Remixed at September Studios, March 1993. Track 2: This is from the very first Blake Babies demo, and it is also one of the first songs John ever wrote. The song appears on Nicely, Nicely, as Better N’ You and on Earwig as Rain. Recorded at Fort Apache, Cambridge, MA Spring 1988 Track 4: During The Lemonheads brief break-up in 1988, Evan Dando was the bass player for Blake Babies and he recorded six songs with them which later comprised the UK Slow Learner EP. These same tracks, including Lament, also appear on their full length debut Earwig. Recorded at Fort Apache, May-July 1988 Track 5: Earwig was nearly called A Faggot Is A Bunch of Sticks. The artwork was at the plant when Freda had second thoughts. Cesspool was the first single from the album Melody Maker called outside record of the year.

No one has said anything yet. More Albums.

Cassette - Mammoth 016). A giant step beyond the Blake Babies' scattershot 1987 debut, Nicely Nicely, 1989's Earwig is an utter delight. Although it was recorded during a period of personnel instability, before the group had once and for all settled into the trio format of Juliana Hatfield on bass and vocals, John P. Strohm on guitar, and Freda Boner on drums, there's a cohesion to this album that makes it greater than the sum of its individual parts
