John Murry was adopted at birth into the family of William Faulkner. Some have speculated that the Faulkner blood might also run in his veins, but that should be left for a Southern Gothic novel yet to be written (or perhaps re-written). The accolades rolled in and John toured the world.
John Miller Murry (born 1979) is an American musician, singer/songwriter, composer and producer. His debut solo record, The Graceless Age, was issued on Evangeline Recording Co. in 2013 and listed by Uncut as one of the 10 best records of 2012. Mojo also included it in their 10 best albums of 2013; The Guardian included it in their Top 50 of 2013; and American Songwriter included it in their Top 5 of 2013.
John Murry's brutal, brilliant album of confessional Americana is one of the year's best so far, writes Michael Hann. John Murry's would be a compelling story had he never made a record – grandson of William Faulkner, an addict who lost his wife and child and home, and almost his life, before cleaning up. And then you get to the record. Musically, it's hardly unfamiliar – weeping Americana, backed with fuzzes of electric guitar and organ that slide in and out of focus, discomfiting and discombobulating – but expertly done.
John Murry began recording The Graceless Age (co-produced with Tim Mooney and Kevin Cubbins) four years ago in San Francisco. He took the tapes to Memphis and back again, adding layers of sound as thick as San Francisco fog and Mississippi mud.
