I see the true spring is in you, he sings at one point, and it might just be the happiest moment on the record. For once he’s not wishing he were an eagle or a tempest or a sunset. He is just Bill Callahan, flying his small plane with a co-pilot by his side, and for the moment at least, that is enough.

Bill Callahan (born June 3, 1966) is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist who has also recorded and performed under the band name Smog. Later he began releasing albums with the label Drag City, to which he remains signed today.

Like his similarly aloof and baritonal contemporary Nick Cave, long-suffering singer-songwriter and former Smog frontman Bill Callahan figured out a few years back where his particular skills lay, and has since proceeded to make roughly the same record over and over again. Regular listeners hoping for a break from mid-paced ballads, cosy semi-electric instrumentation and bone-dry lyrical observance are going to be disappointed with ‘Dream River’

In This Article: Bill Callahan. Artist You Need to Know. Song You Need to Know.

Dream River, the newest album by Bill Callahan, finds that musician putting everything in his songs: love, death, fear, patience, transfiguration. Mr. Callahan is now 47 and has been based in Austin, Te. for almost a decade. In the frequently scrappy or bitter music he made under the name Smog beginning in 1990, and then since he started using his own name on records in 2007, he’s been changing ensembles, sounds and strategies, making his work more country or less, more minimal or less, more disruptive or less.

After the urgent sound of 2011's Apocalypse, where Bill Callahan turned his wry gaze outward to examine America's physical, psychological, and cultural geographies, he returns to a more familiar interior landscape on Dream River

No problem with this pressing. Everything sounds great, no distortion issue here..fine warm sound! Highly recommended! And excellent music!

... although it appears, at least based on my my copy of Dream River, that Drag City may be improving the quality control of its pressings... or should I say RTI, the generally respected pressing plant, which appears to have pressed all of Callahan's records and most of Smog's... my beef has mostly been with poor pressings of Smog releases, as my copy of Apocalypse is decent as well.

Balladolbine
Agreed on both... this record continues Bill Callahan's seemingly endless fountain of creative genius, and Drag City continues to press vinyl of dubious quality, so much so that I've instead pursued the superior Domino UK vinyl pressings of Callahan's recordings where applicable (mostly Smog).

Bandiri
Poor pressing on two LPs I encountered. Bad quality can be recognized with the naked eye: Streaks and runmarks on both sides. Sounds ugly, surface noise and distortions, galore. Don't buy.

Bill Callahan just keeps producing strong material. A personal favorite from 2013. As always with Drag City on vinyl, my only complaint is that it doesn't come with a digital code. The label is really holding out on giving out that perk.
