Night on Bald Mountain, also known as Night on the Bare Mountain, is a series of compositions by Modest Mussorgsky (1839–1881). Inspired by Russian literary works and legend, Mussorgsky composed a "musical picture", St. John's Eve on Bald Mountain (Russian: Иванова ночь на лысой горе, romanized: Ivanova noch′ na lysoy gore) on the theme of a witches' sabbath occurring on St. John's Eve, which he completed on that very night, 23 June 1867

Jose Serebrier assisted Stokowski in their days with the American Symphony Orchestra, the memory and motivation for the coductor to record his mentor's version of "Pictures At An Exhibition" in up to date 21st century sound, coupled with a number of other Stoki specialties. Aside from the more Russian sounding "Pictures", what I enjoyed most here were "Night on Bald Mountain", the "Khovanshchina" conglomeration and the symphonic synthesis on "Boris Godunov"
His Pictures at an Exhibition is massively monumental, his A Night on Bald Mountain is devilishly infernal, his Symphonic Synthesis of Boris Godunov is unerringly dramatic, his "Entr'acte" to Act IV of Khovanshchina is unendingly tragic. And in all of them the Bournemouth Symphony plays like the great and powerful orchestra it is, finding the balance between strength and subtlety and all-out attack.
Pictures at an Exhibition. Boris Godunov, Night on Bare Mountain. Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Symphonic transcriptions by Leopold Stokowski. One of the reasons Leopold Stokowski decided to make his own orchestral version of Mussorgsky’s Night on Bare Mountain was to get closer to the original, bolder and wilder version, as opposed to Rimsky-Korsakov’s cleaner, westernized revision. In fact, Stokowski’s version is actually close to Rimsky-Korsakov’s in content and form, while faithful to the original Mussorgsky in the orchestration
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, José Serebrier. Serebrier's own imposing, heavyweight style yields different results to the volatile Knusse. ut it's always absorbing. Mussorgsky: Boris Godunov: A Symphonic Synthesis. Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition. If A Night on the Bare Mountain finds the Naxos recording rather less immediate than in the other items, the weight of the arrangement comes over well, and the Khovanshchina Entr'acte has impressive weight and clarity. The extra items also weigh in Serebrier's favour: an arrangement of a Tchaikovsky song that explores an astonishingly wide emotional range within a tiny span and the jolly Humoresque, a piano piece that Stravinsky memorably used in his ballet The Fairy's Kiss
Works: Pictures at an Exhibition. Performer: Bournemouth SO/José Serebrier. Stokowski’s Night on the Bare Mountain with its snarling muted brass and outlandish string glissandi outdoes the Rimsky-Korsakov version, itself preferable to Musorgsky’s fitfully brilliant original. Perhaps more surprising is the Boris Godunov synthesis, a poetic tapestry of onlookers’ choruses, songs and chants for orchestra which wisely avoids histrionic plums.
