It's Time! is an album recorded by a group led by American saxophonist Jackie McLean recorded in 1964 and released on the Blue Note label. All compositions by Jackie McLean except as noted. Cancellation" (Charles Tolliver) - 7:45. Revillot" (Tolliver) - 7:51. Truth" (Tolliver) - 6:30. Jackie McLean - alto saxophone. Charles Tolliver - trumpet. Herbie Hancock - piano.
Recorded in 1964, Jackie McLean's band for It's Time includes trumpeter Charles Tolliver, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Roy Haynes. The music was written entirely by either Tolliver or McLean and walks the line between modal post-bop and free jazz. It came hot on the heels of McLean's first forays into these waters on 1963's One Step Beyond and Destination Out!. There is more to it than that, of course; chordal improvisation still plays a large part in the music on this fine record

Led by the masterful saxophonist Steven Lugerner, the hard-hitting Jacknife was formed specifically to honor the legacy of jazz great Jackie McLean, and for this Hotplate performance, the band brings their youthful energy to bear on McLean’s iconic 1965 Blue Note session, It’s Time. An impeccably trained multi-reedist (The New York Times), Lugerner recorded an collection of McLean’s compositions on his 2016 release JACKNIFE: The Music of Jackie McLean, including the leader’s Dis Dat and trumpeter Charles Tolliver’s angular album opener Cancellation, and for this show, dives further in with his superb band.

Many people, at the time, in the clubs where it was played confused the female singers on the track with his name thinking he was actually female. He received an American Jazz Masters fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2001 and numerous other national and international awards. McLean was the only American jazz musician to found a department of studies at a university and a community-based organization almost simultaneously. McLean died on March 31, 2006, in Hartford, Connecticut. In 2006, Jackie McLean was elected to the DownBeat Hall of Fame via the International Critics Poll. He is interred in Woodlawn Cemetery, The Bronx, New York City. Derek Ansell's full-length biography of McLean, Sugar Free Saxophone (London: Northway Books, 2012), details the story of his career and provides a full analysis of his music on record.
