Fourty three years ago in December 1973, Frank Zappa played a series of legendary concerts at the famed Roxy Theatre on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. Considered a high-water mark of his career, owing to the incredible, virtuosic performances of himself and his stellar band The Mothers, the five shows – across three nights – included a private invite-only ck/film shoot followed by back-to-back doubleheaders.

Frank Zappa, it’s immediately obvious, was not like other men. He really wasn’t. He was manically driven, extravagantly gifted, utterly unique. He had a nervous energy that almost had a hum to it, Gail Zappa remembers down the line from Los Angeles. And his appearance was very strange when I met him – raggedy T-shirts and wool tuxedo trousers held up by suspenders. Frank merely taped the conversation and released it on the album Uncle Meat. So he needed a hit. And needed it very badly indeed.

Frank Zappa’s 60-album oeuvre is an imposing body of work. Some of the records are better than others, but the overall quality level is astonishingly high. Which was almost true. It took the invention of the VCR and the formation of Zappa’s own Honker Video company in the Eighties for the world to see this bizarre cinematic document of the Mothers’ first incarnation. My guitar wants to kill your mamma: zappa in the seventies. The accompanying soundtrack album is an essential Zappa work for several reasons.

I'll have to give it four out of five stars - although, this 45RPM definitely has audiophile sound quality. What I thought was interest was that "Won Ton On" was really just the vocal parts of "No Not Now" (Thing-Fish version) reversed, but the drum and bass parts still appear to be going forwards. Near the end there also appears to be a vocal part still going forwards. This is a definite must-have for any Zappa collector, but it's still probably not going to be the first album you want to collect, as three of the songs are on other albums. This is for any Zappa fan, but I think it should be more for the completist.
