William James "Count" Basie (August 21, 1904 – April 26, 1984) was an American jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer. In 1935, Basie formed his own jazz orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra, and in 1936 took them to Chicago for a long engagement and their first recording. He led the group for almost 50 years, creating innovations like the use of two "split" tenor saxophones, emphasizing the rhythm section, riffing with a big band, using arrangers to broaden their sound, and others.
Elegant Joyous Playful Refined Sophisticated. Anniversary Celebration Hanging Out Reminiscing Reunion TGIF. Count Basie, Count Basie & His Orchestra, University of Kentucky Jazz Ensemble. This release gives one a definitive look at the Count Basie Orchestra during its final years. Trumpeter Pete Minger, trombonist Booty Wood and Eric Dixon on tenor and flute are the main soloists, but it is the classic Basie ensemble sound (which never seems to get dated or lose its charm and power) that carries the day. Whether it is "Wind Machine," "Splanky" or "In a Mellow Tone, " this is a highly enjoyable set.
His debut recording with the Count, which still stands as a landmark jazz vocal album, presented Williams' hip, modern take on the blues and gave Basie another big hit with "Every Day I Have the Blues. Count Basie: Chairman of the Board (Blue Note, 1958) This indispensable recording showcases the work of three brilliant arrangers from inside the band-saxophonists Frank Foster and Frank Wess, and trumpeter Thad Jones-plus ex-Basie saxophonist and frequent contributor Ernie Wilkins.
