Two lovers, history Ain't that, two lovers, history. Our family's tried to keep out love aside We stood their and cried with tears in our eyes Puppy love to me never was a game Even in pigtails I always felt the same All grown upside, but still the pumpkin pie Sweet as a wedding cake, the story grows by day. Two lovers, history Ain't that, two lovers, history. Ohh ohh yeah Two lovers Oh, everything is alright Oh yeah baby Sho' 'nuff Out of sight You know, I know Yeah, everything is up tight Two lovers, oh yeah baby Always been your lover, yeah.

Mary Wells‘ first R&B No. 1 was with ‘You Beat Me To The Punch,’ and she was delivering a one-two punch of her own on 29 October 1962. That was the day that the first queen of Motown released the follow-up single, ‘Two Lovers,’ and watched it repeat the feat to give her two soul chart-toppers in a row. ‘Punch’ was written by Smokey Robinson with his Miracles colleague Ron White, but for the new release, Smokey was the sole composer and producer. The song was cut in early August, with ‘Operator,’ which had been taped in February, becoming its flip side
Mary Esther Wells was born near Detroit's Wayne State University on May 13, 1943, to a mother who worked as a domestic, and an absentee father. One of three children, she contracted spinal meningitis at the age of two and struggled with partial blindness, deafness in one ear and temporary paralysis At age 10, Wells contracted tuberculosis. During her early years, Wells lived in a poor residential Detroit district. In late 1962, "Two Lovers" became Wells' third consecutive single to hit the Top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100, peaking at and becoming her second hit on the R&B charts. In 1990, Wells recorded an album for Ian Levine's Motorcity Records, but her voice began to fail, causing the singer to visit a local hospital. "Mary Wells - Chart history - R&B Chart".
